Giving an article a title like ‘The Importance of Sound Effects in Film’ rather seems to be suggesting that the importance of sound was ever in doubt. It really isn’t: most accounts of early cinema indicate that synchronised sound recording was an eventual goal, and as early as 1900 exhibitions of phonographs running in synchronisation with films were witnessed publically. As the technology matured and sound on film became possible, the death of the silent film was inevitable. The importance of sound isn’t quite the straw-man I want to attack. However, I would argue that the importance of sound effects (rather than sound in general) is something that we take for granted in film.

It’s very easy to look at any aspect of early cinema and marvel at people’s naiveté. Wilfred Jackson’s use of percussive sound effects for the seven and a half minutes of Steamboat Willie should be tedious to watch now. But the apparent awe of the creators for synchronised sounds is itself entirely fascinating (though the bizarre animal cruelty will keep your eyes glued to the screen for one reason or another anyway).

Taking sound effects for granted is perhaps a sign that film-makers are using them correctly. Unlike Music for Film, sound effects aren’t supposed to make themselves known in the majority of circumstances. But people buy film soundtracks and discuss their merits, whilst appreciation of sound effects and editing is limited to only the most enthusiastic audiophiles. There’s also a growing sense that sound effect work is becoming clichéd, stale and just plain disliked in many high profile films.

Perhaps it’s because so many films out there are abusing sound effects? I’m not even talking about the culture of ‘in-jokes’ that has given us the ‘Wilhelm’ and the ‘Howie’ screams. These effects do take you out of the movie, but are usually intentionally hidden in the track so you have to be specifically listening for them. No, the real problem is with those movies that insist on using the small gene-pool of mechanical door effects (there’s one in particular that seems to appear in everything from the Aliens to the computer game Doom. It sound pretty terrible to begin with), squealing tires and gun reloading cues.

Seriously, if you’re a sound designer, please get out there are source new effects, or at least use a provider like Audio Network who have a decent library.

The latest stats from the Finance and leading association show that in the year 2008 50% of people bought cars using car dealer finance! This figure is up by about 46.2% from the year before.

Car dealer finance is simply to easy these days. Companies just at the chance of having someone pay them x amount of money for the next 4-5 years. Its what keeps their company alive. Investing into a fixed asset like a car is a tricky business. Although car finance is attractive you have to be careful that you are not being ripped off!

Even my brother of 17 got offererd some car finance not long ago! Trust me they try and get you when your young! What you really need is some finance lease software to keep ontop of how much you would be paying back and when. Make sure that your not getting a bad deal!

Many buyers opt for traditional hire purchase, but FLA figures show that both leasing and Personal Contract Purchase have also proved extremely popular over the past 12 months – up by 27% and 18% respectively over this period.

There has been quite a bit going on lately, so I figured it would be easier to just do a summary post of all the things.

Jennicide Is Off For Jury Duty
Jennifer Leigh (aka Jennicide) had to leave the WSOP early this year to attend jury duty.

In her blog she recently wrote:
“I have been having a chain of nightmares of being sequestered to a long murder trial, in which I feel sorry for the 11 other jurors that would have to be witness to my bantering and childlike snootiness for the terrible circumstances.

I need to be in Las Vegas during these times! Yet, I am stuck in Delaware! I have to wake up at an unreasonable hour too! Reporting to the courthouse at 8:30 a.m.?!”

Ernest “The Murderer” Scherer Playing WSOP Events
Ok, we made the nickname up, but Gambling911 released an article that Sherer is the main suspect for the murder of his parents.

    Hookers Get Rolled
Pauly posted a great story about how some poker players rolled some hookers with tournament chips…

“Benjo told me a hilarious story about how Bellagio hookers were trying to cash tournament chips at the cage.
Apparently, a couple of horny and angle-shooting poker players removed $1,000 denomination tournament chips out of play. They used those chips to pay off hookers, who were not very bright and accepted the chips in return for sexual favors. Of course they did not read the fine print on the chips where it said it’s not legal tender and only a tournament chip.

Horny Poker Players 1, Dumb Hookers 0.”
