Giving an article a title like ‘The Importance of Sound Effects in Film’ rather seems to be suggesting that the importance of sound was ever in doubt. It really isn’t: most accounts of early cinema indicate that synchronised sound recording was an eventual goal, and as early as 1900 exhibitions of phonographs running in synchronisation with films were witnessed publically. As the technology matured and sound on film became possible, the death of the silent film was inevitable. The importance of sound isn’t quite the straw-man I want to attack. However, I would argue that the importance of sound effects (rather than sound in general) is something that we take for granted in film.

It’s very easy to look at any aspect of early cinema and marvel at people’s naiveté. Wilfred Jackson’s use of percussive sound effects for the seven and a half minutes of Steamboat Willie should be tedious to watch now. But the apparent awe of the creators for synchronised sounds is itself entirely fascinating (though the bizarre animal cruelty will keep your eyes glued to the screen for one reason or another anyway).

Taking sound effects for granted is perhaps a sign that film-makers are using them correctly. Unlike Music for Film, sound effects aren’t supposed to make themselves known in the majority of circumstances. But people buy film soundtracks and discuss their merits, whilst appreciation of sound effects and editing is limited to only the most enthusiastic audiophiles. There’s also a growing sense that sound effect work is becoming clichéd, stale and just plain disliked in many high profile films.

Perhaps it’s because so many films out there are abusing sound effects? I’m not even talking about the culture of ‘in-jokes’ that has given us the ‘Wilhelm’ and the ‘Howie’ screams. These effects do take you out of the movie, but are usually intentionally hidden in the track so you have to be specifically listening for them. No, the real problem is with those movies that insist on using the small gene-pool of mechanical door effects (there’s one in particular that seems to appear in everything from the Aliens to the computer game Doom. It sound pretty terrible to begin with), squealing tires and gun reloading cues.

Seriously, if you’re a sound designer, please get out there are source new effects, or at least use a provider like Audio Network who have a decent library.

    Wedding for only £20

    Posted In: Rants by edtheduck

Do you want to know what the secret is? Well, the secret is a little un-truthful as it is not really just £20. Forget spending millions on wedding caterers and fly out to Thailand. You can get married, eat all you want, get drunk, get the biggest venue in Thailand all for about £20.

It is so cheap over there you wont believe. I was over there a short while ago and the people were so nice, you can live lavishly on little money and the country is so beautiful. Most importantly, you dont need to be Thai in order to get married over there. Their laws allow anyone of any nationality to get married in their country. So there you go, ok you have to buy a flight but the actualy marriage itself will cost you peanuts!

    Mouse Trap Drainage System

    Posted In: Rants by edtheduck

Check out this for a drainage system! This design was constructed by Rube Goldberg on a house in South Korea. The artist spent months and month designing how it work and then putting hard hours into gruelling metal fabrication. The piece was shown at an art gallery in south korea and was awarded, “most bizzarre” sculpture of 2008!

This morning I received a flyer through the door about some amazing new discount savings on white bedroom furniture from a local shop in London called, New England Lifestyle. I have been to the shop once or twice before and really liked their stuff.

OK, it was a bit pricy but it was excellent quality. My wife and I bought several items for our house last year from the shop and we will definetly be going back there for more!

Earlier this week a governement advisor responsible for the regeneration of some our countries most blighted parts of England, announced that a tax imposed on empty commercial buildings is threatening to derail efforts to inject new life into un-developed areas of the UK.

Some developers around the country are preapring to walk away from building project as they simply do not want to risk the liability for the tax. It is fair to say that with the current credit crunch, buying and selling uk land has never been harder. Councils from across the country are joining in on campaigns to get the tax repealed. This is truly a devious, ill-though stealth tax from our crooked governement. The government is monitoring the impact of these reforms. There are pleanty of provisions in the legislation for rates to be cut by %50 again depending on the state of the UK economy. To buy land for building is expensive enough but now I cant believe that the government have found yet another way to exploit this for tax purposes.

Alot of people have started to go for the all in one washing machines and tumble dryers. This is maybe because with the new fitted kitchens getting cheaper and cheaper people do not want to clutter the nice design with big clunky washing machines and tumble dryer so they just get the best out of both worlds with just one version.

But are these actually as reliable as two separate ones? The answer unfortunatley is no, everyday I see the 2in1s failing because companies have still not been able to master the art of combining both technologies with one releasing water and then asking your machine to totally discard that and dry the clothes. Its just like chucking your hairdryer into the bath and then asking it to work, there is just no way that this will happen. Once they find a solution I am sure the launderettes and dry cleaners will take advantage of the new commercial laundry equipment.
